Elderly Rohingya killed, two hurt in stampede at iftar crowd

Cox’s Bazar, March 14 - A Rohingya elderly man was killed and two others injured in a stampede during an iftar gathering attended by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus and UN Secretary-General António Guterres in Cox’s Bazar on Friday.

The incident occurred around 2:30 pm on Friday, March 14, at the helipad area of Camp 20 in the Rohingya refugee camp. ALthough styled an 'Iftar', people were arriving at the location all day.

The deceased, Neyamat Ullah, was the son of the late Sabi Mia from Camp 4. The injured individuals are Asmat Ullah, son of Asad Ullah from the same camp, and Kalim Ullah, son of Basir Ahmed. Asmat Ullah was sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.

Muhammad Arif Hossain, The officer-in-charge (OC) of Ukhiya police station, said, “Three people were injured after falling from the hillside while attending the iftar gathering. Neyamat Ullah was declared dead by doctors upon arrival at the hospital.” - UNB
