Over 550,000 Syrians return home from Turkey
Over 550,000 Syrian refugees in Turkey have returned to their homeland since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad last December, Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on Saturday.
He said nearly 2.4 million Syrians still remain in Turkey, down from a peak of more than 3.5 million who had sought refuge there during the years of conflict.
The UN Refugee Agency reported on Friday that a total of 1.16 million Syrians have returned to the country since Assad’s regime collapsed on December 8, 2024. It also noted that around 1.9 million internally displaced people have been able to go back to their homes.
Despite these returns, the UN estimates that more than seven million Syrians remain displaced within the country, while about 4.5 million continue to live abroad.
