Rival groups of Lalbagh BNP clash at Nayapaltan

Rival groups of Lalbagh unit of yesterday engaged in clash in front of the party’s central office at Naya Paltan centering formation of the thana committee leaving at least seven injured including a police personnel.
Eyewitness said supporters of BNP assistant organising secretary Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu, now in jail and those of former Dhaka City Corporation commissioner Mir Ali Azam met in a clash before the beginning of the thana committee meeting at the party’s Dhaka city office at Bhashani Bhaban.BNP joint secretary general Barkatullah Bulu who was given charge by the party chief Khaleda Zia to look after the formation process of certain ward and thana committees of Dhaka city including the one of Lalbagh, convened the meeting.
The supporters of Pintu and Azam staged the showdown to show their “strength” in the area to put pressure on the respective BNP central leaders for include their men in the new committee of Lalbagh.
At one stage of the scuffle, the rival groups swooped on their opponents with sticks, brickbats and chair on the Naya Paltan VIP road for nearly half an hour.
A small number of police who were on duty in front of the BNP central office tried to tame the unruly BNP men but failed. Later additional police personnel moved to the spot, started baton charge and disperse the BNP men.
Pedestrians and commuters who were passing the area at that time were panicked.
Constable Ershad Ali was admitted to nearby Police Hospital at Fakirerpul. Injured BNP men left the scene fearing police arrest.
Meeting of the BNP Lalbagh unit was held after the situation become normal. But Bulu, however, was not present there. – Staff Reporter
