Leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Manufactures and Exporters Association (BGMEA) sat in a fresh meeting with a number of ministers and labour leaders on Friday night to discuss the next course of actions hours after holding a press conference.“The leaders are already in a meeting again. A number of ministers and all labour leaders are there in the meeting,” a BGMEA official told UNB over phone preferring anonymity.
He said Home Minister Dr Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir, Industries Minister Dilip Barua, LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian, head of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour Ministry M Israfil Alam are already in the meeting.
The BGMEA leader also said the meeting is likely to continue till 10pm and more ministers are expected to join.
Earlier, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) jointly arranged a press conference to update media on their decisions.
BKMEA President AKM Selim Osman, former BGMEA President Annisul Huq, former FBCCI President AK Azad, and other leaders of the BKMEA and BGMEA were present.
At the press conference, they announced that the production in all the readymade garment (RMG) factories will remain closed on Saturday and Sunday for, what they said, ensuring proper treatment and completion of rescue operation successfully.
They also said the owner of Rana Plaza, Sohel Rana, and owners of the RMG factories housed in the building, would soon surrender showing respect to law.
Earlier, the leaders of the trade bodies held a meeting to take the decision amid fresh unrest in the garment industry and demonstrations by the garment workers.UNB
