US Military Condemns North Korea’s Destabilizing Missile Launch

The US military said on Friday it is “consulting closely” with allies and partners following North Korea’s latest ballistic missile launch.

“While we have assessed that this event does not pose an immediate threat to US personnel, territory, or our allies, the missile launch highlights the destabilizing impact of North Korea’s actions,” the US Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement.

Japan reported that Pyongyang’s latest missile landed outside its exclusive economic zone. The launch comes just over a week after US President Donald Trump visited the region, during which he expressed interest in meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

During his trip, Trump also announced approval of South Korea’s plan to build a nuclear-powered submarine. Analysts say such a development would mark a major advancement for South Korea’s naval capabilities, placing it among a select group of countries with such vessels.

North Korea, which has strengthened ties with Russia amid Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, has not responded to Trump’s offer to meet with Kim.
