The US Embassy in Dhaka has issued a security and travel alert for Bangladesh, warning of potential violence as the country prepares for its national parliamentary election and a referendum.

In a notice released on Monday, the embassy highlighted that political rallies and protests are expected to increase in the coming weeks and advised US citizens to avoid large gatherings and demonstrations.

The Election Commission has scheduled the parliamentary vote and referendum for February 12. The embassy cautioned that as the election approaches, political activities may intensify, and protests that start peacefully could quickly turn violent.

US nationals were urged to exercise heightened caution, stay away from crowded areas, monitor local media for updates, and remain alert to their surroundings.

The advisory also recommended that US citizens contact the embassy or the Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs in case of emergencies and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program for updated security information and assistance.
