Nasreen Huq
Naripokkho invites you to the Nasreen Huq Memorial Lecture 2022, which will take place online. The annual lecture event is held on Nasreen Huq’s birth anniversary, the 18th November. This year’s speaker is Shanthi Dairiam, Founder of International Women's Rights Action Watch Asia Pacific, based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
She will speak on - “The Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the struggle for women's right to equality."
Nasreen Huq stands apart, both for her personal achievements and what she symbolized for a movement. Indeed, her movement included all who are fighting for the establishment of democratic principles and human values, whom she led and inspired with courage and strength. She dreamt lofty dreams, and had the ability to translate dreams into action. She had the unique ability of inspiring others to take strong actions and to aspire to reach beyond ascribed limits.
Outspoken and bold, she was untiring in her efforts to create a better world – a better country, a better community – for all.
She was a true democrat, who struggled to establish the principles of equality and freedom not only in the larger social movements, but also in her personal life. She acknowledged no social barriers, and could befriend all, regardless of age, class position, sex or sexual orientation. She was a role model for young people who came in contact with her, she opened her heart and home to anyone who wanted to come close to her, and in her personal life practiced the democratic mores most of us just advocate. The strength of her personality, her commitment and passions mean that she is sorely missed by all.
Remembering Nasreen Huq through her activism and involvement in various social movements is perhaps the best way of keeping her vision and spirit alive. It is with this intention that Naripokkho has instituted the annual Nasreen Huq Memorial Lecture to be held on her birth anniversary. We plan to invite speakers who are themselves involved in social movements in their own countries, region or in international arenas. Naripokkho thinks this will be a fitting way to remember Nasreen and take her movements forward.
We look forward to your participation in the event and joining in our effort to commemorate Nasreen’s indomitable spirit and search for knowledge and new directions.
