New iPhone AI to Use Arm’s Latest Chip Technology

Apple's upcoming iPhone, set to be unveiled at the iPhone 16 event later today, will incorporate Arm's latest V9 chip design in its A18 chip, according to a report by the Financial Times. Arm, owned by SoftBank, has provided the advanced technology crucial to the development of Apple's new device.

In September of last year, Apple secured a significant deal with Arm, extending their collaboration well beyond 2040. This partnership underscores Arm's prominent role in chip technology, with its V9 design reportedly driving 50% of global smartphone revenue. Arm holds the intellectual property for the computing architecture used in most smartphones, which it licenses to Apple and numerous other tech companies.

Apple has long relied on Arm's technology to develop its custom chips for iPhones, iPads, and Macs. The relationship dates back to the early 1990s when Apple was among the founding partners of Arm. Although Apple's first device using Arm technology, the Newton handheld computer, did not succeed, Arm's focus on low-power, efficient chips helped it dominate the mobile phone market and extend battery life in smartphones.
