Tissue culture brings agri revolution in Rajshahi

Cultivation of crops through tissue culture has brought a silent revolution in agricultural sector in Rajshahi region.
Thousands of farmers of the region have changed their lot by growing quality crops through using tissue cultured saplings. To feed farmers with sterile saplings, 14 tissue culture laboratories are now functioning commercially in Rajshahi.  Farmers are producing crops or vegetables by using these plantlets.The observations came at a daylong workshop styled “Potato Farming through Tissue Culture” held at the seminar hall of Institute of Biological Sciences (IBSc) of Rajshahi University (RU) here yesterday.Vice Chancellor Prof Mijan Uddin addressed the inaugural session as the chief guest with IBSc Director Prof Tanjima Yeasmin in the chair.IBSc teacher Prof Abdul Bari Mian, Agriculturists Mohsin Ali, Dr Nur Alam Siddiqui and Dr Nurun Nahar Khatun spoke on the occasion, among others.The speakers said there are more than 100 tissue culture laboratories which are being run as research organisations, commercial enterprises and educational institutions.The largest number of tissue culture laboratories is situated in Rajshahi. Of them, Akafuji agro-technologies, Aman cold storages, Alo Asha biotech labs, Bengal cold storages, Biotech, Nighar cold storage, Genetic seeds, High-tech, Supreme Seeds, Green Glory, BMDA and BADC are commercially preparing saplings of various crops, vegetables and fruits.Most of these labs produce potato saplings but Alo Asha Biotech Laboratory, a specialised institution, is producing tissue cultured saplings of strawberry, sugarcane, banana, stevia, gerbera, orchid, lillium, tomato and capsicum commercially.They said farmers of the region are harvesting potato, tomato, strawberry, potato and other crops by using tissue cultured saplings.Hundreds of farmers like Abdul Momin of Bualia under Paba upazila, Mostafa Kamal of Parila village, Abdur Rashid of Kashimpur Bazaar of Tanore upazila and Nur Alam of Khanpur under Mohanpur upazila have transplanted tissue cultured seed potatoes in their fields.Azahar Ali of Kanaipara and Montu of Bihari Para under Puthia upazila have won state award for their special contribution in cultivation of crops through tissue culture.Many farmers including Tajimul Haque and Moniruzzaman of Paba and Tofazzal of Naogaon have become self-reliant by cultivating strawberry.Many are also using tissue cultured saplings of gerbera, banana and capsicum for getting fresh and bumper harvest.They added that there has been a tremendous demand for tissue cultured saplings in Rajshahi. Not only farmers, but many educated youths,
business personnel and traders have become self-reliant by using tissue cultured saplings in this region, they added. -BSS, Rajshahi
