Two brothers drowned while bathing in the Atrai River in Khansama upazila of the district today.

The deceased were identified as Md Mannan Islam, 45, and his younger brother Md Saddam Hossain, 32, sons of late Siraj Uddin and residents of Mirpur-11 area in the capital.

Officer-in-Charge of Khansama Police Station Md Abdul Based Sarkar confirmed the incident to BSS this afternoon.

According to local sources, the two brothers had travelled to Khansama from a relative's house in Chirirbandar upazila. Around noon, while returning from a visit to a litchi orchard, they entered the Atrai River at Kalibazar Ghat for a bath along with two other family members.

At one stage, the brothers drowned in deep water. Mannan's two sons, Sajib, 16, and Nur Alam, 12, managed to swim ashore safely.

Locals and members of the Fire Service launched a rescue operation immediately after being informed. Mannan's body was recovered around 3:30 pm,
while divers from Rangpur recovered Saddam's body about half an hour later.

The OC said the bodies would be handed over to their families without autopsy as there was no objection from the relatives, reports BSS.
