A fifth-grade student drowned while bathing in the Dakatiya River after playing football with friends in the district this afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Abdullah Rahat, 11, a student of Puran Bazar No. 2 Government Primary Boys' School.

According to locals, Rahat went to the river with friends after a football match and slipped into deep water while bathing as he did not know how to swim.

He went missing around 1 pm near the Tofadar Rice Mill area at No. 5 Ghat in Puran Bazar.

Two local youths recovered his body from the river about an hour later with assistance from Fire Service divers.

He was taken to Chandpur Government General Hospital, where the attending physician declared him dead, reports BSS.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station Fayez Ahmed said the family took the body for burial as they had no complaint over the incident.
