
The deceased were identified as Farhan, 7, son of Fazlur Rahman Faju, and Lam Islam, 8, son of Bablu, both residents of Shampur area.
The incident occurred around 3pm near Chandrapur No. 1 Government Primary School under Nazirpur union, Officer-in-Charge of Gurudaspur Police Station Abdul Hannan.
According to locals, the two children were swept away by the strong current while bathing in the river. Seeing them drown, a local resident, Arjun Haldar, searched the river and later recovered their bodies.
Meanwhile, around 8pm, two policemen went to the children's homes to prepare the mandatory inquest reports.
Local villagers, angered by their attempt to conduct the inquest after the janaza prayers were already held, attacked them at WAPDA Bazar.
The villagers then confined them to a local madrasah. Later, additional police rushed to the spot and rescued them, reports UNB.
Sub-Inspector Abul Bashar and Constable Rakib were suspended over the incident, said Mohammad Shariqul Haque, superintendent of police in Natore.
