Two fifth-graders drown in Gazipur

Two schoolchildren, both aged 11, died while bathing in a river in Gazipur's Sreepur on Wednesday.


Rabbi, 11, son of Rafiqul Islam of Beldia area of Sreepur upazila, and Muktasin, 11, son of Ruhul Amin of Bapta area of the same upazila, were classmates at the local Bapta Government Primary School, where they were in the fifth grade.

The deceased Rabbi's home is in Beldia village and Muktasin's home is in the nearby Bapta area.

According to local and police sources, after playing football in the afternoon in Berdia area of Kawraid in Sreepur, Muktasin and Rabbi went to bathe in the Sutia river in front of Hajibari. At one stage of bathing, they drowned in the river water.

Later, locals rescued them and took them to the hospital, where the doctor declared both of them dead, reports UNB.

Md. Shahinur Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sreepur Police Station, said the matter is being investigated.
