Two toddlers, related as maternal uncle and nephew, drowned in a pond in Chaugachha upazila of Jashore on Sunday evening.

The deceased were identified as Mahamudul Islam, son of Asaduzzaman Shanto Islam of Kashimpur village in Jashore Sadar upazila, and Huraira Hossain, son of Arif Hossain of Phulsara village. Both were around two and a half years old.

The incident occurred at Dhalipara of Phulsara village under Phulsara Union.

According to relatives and police, Arif Hossain's daughter had come to her father's home in Phulsara from her in-laws' house in Kashimpur village two days ago. On Sunday afternoon, her son Mahamudul and Arif's son Huraira went to play near a pond beside their home.

At one point, the two children accidentally fell into the pond and drowned.

When the children could not be found, their relatives started searching for them. They later spotted the bodies floating in the pond.

Local people rushed to the spot, recovered the bodies and took the children to Chaugachha Dr Anisuzzaman Hospital, where doctors declared them dead.

Officer-in-Charge Chaugachha Police Station Mamunur Rashid said police went to the spot after receiving the news, reports UNB.

An unnatural death case has been filed, he said.
