Two minor sisters drowned in a pond while playing on one of the banks of the water body in Chandina upazila of Cumilla on Tuesday.

The deceased were Samia Akter, 3, and her one and half-year-old sister Hamida Aktar, daughters of CNG-run autorickshaw driver Sujan Mia of Maijkhar Purbo Para village under Maijkhar union of the upazila.

Family members and locals said the sisters were playing on one of the banks of the pond which the family members didn’t notice in the morning, reports UNB.

At one stage, they fell into the pond and subsequently drowned, they said.

As they were not found for long, later their bodies were found floating in the pond at noon.

Though they were taken to Upazila Health Complex where physicians declared them dead upon arrival, said their paternal uncle Khokan Mia.

Chandina police station’s Officer-in-Charge Md Nazmul Huda said they came to know about the tragic incident from reporters, saying it was very regrettable.
