A pregnant woman and a minor girl drowned in the Jamuna river at Banchamara area under Daulatpur upazila of the Manikganj district yesterday while they were bathing.

Locals said a group of people, including men and women, were bathing in the Jamuna river when a sudden strong current swept away six of them.
Four were rescued by the locals, but two went missing in the river.

The victims were identified as Borsha Khatun, 20, a pregnant woman and daughter of Md Abdul Boyati, and Lamia Khatun, 10, daughter of Md Rahej Boyati - both residents of Banchamara Purbopara village under the upazila.

On information, a team of firefighters from the Aricha Ghat Fire Service rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. However, the bodies could not be recovered till dusk.

"The rescue operation will resume today," said sources from the Fire Service.

Daulatpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nahian Nuren told BSS that the Fire Service will continue searching for the missing bodies today. The upazila administration has also launched awareness campaigns through miking to caution locals about the dangerous parts of the river and ensure safety, reports BSS.

The bodies were yet to be found till the filing of this report.
