Two cousins, both aged two, drowned in a water-filled pit near their house in Tarakanda Upazila on Monday.

The deceased were identified as Aliullah, son of Babul Mia of Gopaldarikel village, and Ruby Akhter, daughter of Rasel Mia.

The incident occurred around 10:30 am in Gopaldarikel village under Kamargaon Union of the upazila.

According to police and local sources, the two children were playing near their house when they accidentally fell into a nearby water-filled pit and drowned. Family members searched for them but could not find them initially.

Around noon, the bodies of the two children were seen floating in the pit. They were rescued and rushed to Tarakanda Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead, reports UNB.

Tanvir Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tarakanda Police Station, said the bodies were handed over to the families for burial without an autopsy as no complaint was lodged.
