September May See Three Low-Pressure Systems, Flood Risk

Bangladesh may receive less rainfall than usual in September, but one to three monsoon low-pressure systems could form over the Bay of Bengal during the month, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

One of the systems may intensify into a depression, while two to three mild to moderate heatwaves are also forecast.

The weather forecast was issued on Tuesday at a regular meeting of the expert committee formed by the Meteorological Department to prepare long-range forecasts.

Daytime and nighttime temperatures are likely to remain above normal throughout September, potentially triggering two to three mild to moderate heatwaves.

A mild heatwave occurs when the maximum temperature reaches 36°C to 37.9°C, while a moderate heatwave is recorded when the maximum temperature ranges between 38°C and 39.9°C.

The country may also experience thunderstorms on three to five days during the month. One to three monsoon low-pressure systems may develop over the Bay of Bengal, with one potentially developing into a depression.

The forecast said the major rivers are likely to maintain their normal flow during September. However, heavy rainfall could trigger short-term flooding in parts of the northern, northeastern and southeastern regions.

The Meteorological Department also forecast that daily average evaporation could range between 2.5 and 4.5 millimetres, while the average duration of bright sunshine may remain between 4.5 and 6.5 hours during the month.
