Low pressure turning into a cyclone may cross BD coast on Sunday

Dhaka, May 25 - The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said that the clear low pressure over the Bay of Bengal has already turned into a low pressure. According to the latest information, its direction is now towards Bangladesh.

The BMD Director informed the media that although it has not yet become a cyclone, there is a possibility that the cyclone will cross the Bangladesh coast by Sunday (26 May) evening. In that case, it will come close to the coast that morning.

Director of Meteorological Department Mohammad Azizur Rahman told reporters on Friday afternoon, "The center is likely to pass over Bangladesh in the current position."

The depression was located 730 and 765 km south of Payra and Mongla seaports, respectively, on Friday afternoon.

"From the models we are running, we see the possibility of a severe cyclone coming closer to the coast." "If it becomes a cyclone, more precise information will be available about its course and extent”.

Meteorologist Abul Kalam Mallick said that it is likely to develop into a deep depression after gaining more strength.

Low pressure is currently over the East Central Bay of Bengal and adjacent parts of the West Central Bay of Bengal. It may move further northeast and intensify. According to meteorologists, it is heading towards the Sundarbans and Khepupara of Bangladesh coast.

Besides, the storm was 805 km from Chattogram seaport and 740 km from Cox's Bazar.

According to the Meteorological Department, just before the onset of 'monsoon' (rainy season), the humidity is very high. As a result, if a cyclone occurs during this time, the amount of rainfall is very high.

As a result, if the low pressure turns into a cyclone, wind-driven gusts, and along with rain or thunder may occur, said meteorologist Abul Kalam Mallick.

And Director of Meteorological Department Mohammad Azizur Rahman said, the more it progresses, the more heavy rain will occur.

The low pressure over Southwest of Bay of Bengal turned into marked low pressure On Thursday night.

"It is not possible to tell whether or not a cyclone will occur or how it will move until it becomes a depression. Only when it becomes a depression, location can be known," said meteorologist Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallick. "The initial stage of a cyclone is the formation of low pressure in the ocean," he added.

Another meteorologist Omar Farooq said on Thursday, "When it becomes a cyclone it will be called Remal." The Arabic word remal means sand.

Warning signal

The Storm Warning Center of the Meteorological Department issued a notification at 3 PM Bangladesh time on Friday.

It said sustained maximum wind speed of 40 kph within 44 km of the depression center increasing to 50 kph in gusty form.

The sea is moderately rough in the vicinity of the low pressure center.Warnings have also been issued for seaports.

It is reported that Chatttogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra sea ports have been asked to show distant warning signal number one.

Earlier on Thursday, fishermen were advised not to go for fishing in South and Central Bay of Bengal.

From Friday to Sunday, the movement of fishermen has also been banned in the North Bay of Bengal. "Fishing boats and trawlers operating in North Bay of Bengal and deep sea have been asked to proceed cautiously close to the coast until further notice."

Weather forecast

According to the latest forecast of BMD, On Saturday, the day temperature may drop slightly across the country. The night temperature may remain almost unchanged. The discomfort may persist due to increased humidity.

It has also predicted an increase in rainfall for the next five days from Sunday. However, it said, "rainfall trends may decrease towards the end of this period".-

However, the amount of rainfall is likely to increase on Saturday. The Meteorological Department has predicted rain or thundershowers with temporary gusts or gales in all the eight divisions.

It also said that most of the places in Khulna, Barisal and Chatttogram divisions may experience rain or thundershowers with temporary gusts or wind.

Many places in Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and two places each in Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions may experience rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds.-BBC Bangla
