Thakurgaon, Nov 27 -- An adult male nilgai that was caught by a mob in Minapur village of Thakurgaon's Haripur upazila on Friday afternoon, died of its injuries hours later, officials said.

The nilgai had sustained injuries while rushing through the barbed wire fence along the border to enter Bangladesh from India, according to Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) officials.

"It was caught by locals in Minapur village as it strayed into agricultural fields. But we rescued it," said Haripur’s Karigaon BGB camp’s Naik Subedar Kafil Uddin.

The BGB members rushed the animal to Haripur Upazila Animal Resources Hospital but the nilgai died in the evening "due to excessive bleeding".

Haripur police officer-in-charge Tajul Islam said the animal died during treatment. - UNB
