In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
The Holy Qur'an is the ultimate source of guidance for humanity. Among its most profound chapters are Surah Ar-Rahman (Chapter 55) and Surah Al-Waqi'ah (Chapter 56). These two Surahs beautifully complement each other by highlighting Allah's limitless mercy, His countless blessings, the reality of human accountability, and the certainty of life after death. In the light of these two Surahs, I would like to present a brief reflection and summary.
Surah Ar-Rahman: A Manifestation of Divine Mercy
Surah Ar-Rahman begins with a powerful declaration of Allah's mercy:
«"The Most Merciful. He taught the Qur'an. He created man. He taught him speech." (55:1-4)»
These opening verses remind us that Allah's greatest gift to humanity is guidance through the Qur'an. Alongside physical creation, Allah has blessed mankind with intellect, communication, and the ability to distinguish right from wrong.
The Surah then draws attention to numerous signs of Allah's power and wisdom in the universe:
- The sun and the moon move according to precise calculations.
- The stars and trees submit to Allah's command.
- The heavens have been raised and established with perfect balance and measure.
- The earth has been spread out for all living creatures.
- Countless provisions have been created for the benefit of mankind and jinn.
One of the most remarkable features of this Surah is the repeated verse:
«"Which of the favours of your Lord will you deny?"»
This question is repeated 31 times throughout the chapter. The repetition is not merely rhetorical; rather, it serves as a powerful reminder for both mankind and jinn to reflect upon Allah's endless blessings and signs. It urges us to acknowledge His mercy, express gratitude, and avoid arrogance.
The Surah further reminds us that this worldly life is a place of trial and examination. Human beings may imagine themselves to be independent and powerful, but in reality they remain entirely under Allah's control. Despite the apparent freedom granted during this period of testing, neither man nor jinn possesses the power to escape the limits established by Allah.
The Qur'an challenges mankind:
«"O assembly of jinn and mankind! If you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass. You will not pass except with authority."»
This verse clearly demonstrates the limitations of human power and the absolute sovereignty of Allah. When the period of testing comes to an end and the Day of Accountability arrives, no one will be able to escape Allah's judgment.
The Surah concludes with vivid descriptions of Paradise and its rewards for the righteous, emphasizing that those who fear Allah and remain obedient to Him will be granted eternal happiness and unimaginable blessings.
Surah Al-Waqi'ah: The Inevitable Reality
Surah Al-Waqi'ah begins with a solemn declaration regarding the Day of Resurrection:
«"When the Event (Al-Waqi'ah) occurs, there will be no denying its occurrence."»
The Surah presents the Day of Judgment as an absolute and unavoidable reality. It teaches that worldly status, wealth, power, and influence will lose all significance on that Day. Allah will bring about a complete reversal of worldly fortunes, humiliating the arrogant and elevating the sincere believers.
Although people often feel free to act as they wish in this world, they should remember that Allah is All-Knowing and All-Powerful. Every action, intention, and deed is being recorded and will be brought forward for judgment.
A striking aspect of this Surah is the division of humanity into three distinct groups:
1. The Foremost (As-Sabiqoon)
These are the pioneers of faith and righteousness who excelled in obedience to Allah and devoted themselves wholeheartedly to good deeds. They will enjoy the highest ranks in Paradise and will be nearest to Allah.
The Qur'an describes them as residing in Gardens of Bliss, reclining upon luxurious thrones, surrounded by everlasting delights, abundant fruits, flowing rivers, and pure companionship.
2. The Companions of the Right Hand (Ashab Al-Yamin)
These are the believers whose faith remained firm and whose good deeds outweighed their shortcomings. They will enter Paradise and enjoy peace, security, and prosperity.
The Qur'an describes their eternal abode as a place of refreshing shade, flowing water, beautiful gardens, and endless comfort, free from fear, grief, or hardship.
3. The Companions of the Left Hand (Ashab Ash-Shimal)
These are those who rejected the truth, denied Allah's signs, and persisted in wrongdoing. Their reward will be severe punishment.
The Surah portrays their condition with vivid imagery of scorching winds, boiling water, and unbearable suffering. Their fate serves as a warning for all who turn away from divine guidance.
Fulfilled Prophecies and Divine Truth
The Holy Qur'an contains many prophecies and statements that have been fulfilled throughout history, further strengthening the faith of believers. Likewise, our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) foretold that the Muslim Ummah would be divided into many groups. History has witnessed the emergence of numerous sects and divisions within the Muslim world, reflecting the truthfulness of his prophecies.
However, rather than focusing on division, Muslims should strive to adhere sincerely to the Qur'an and the authentic teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him), seeking unity upon truth and righteousness.
Conclusion
Both Surah Ar-Rahman and Surah Al-Waqi'ah deliver a profound and timeless message. Surah Ar-Rahman reminds us of Allah's boundless mercy and countless blessings, while Surah Al-Waqi'ah vividly portrays the certainty of the Hereafter and the consequences of our choices in this life.
Together, these two Surahs call upon humanity to recognize Allah's favours, remain grateful, uphold righteousness, and prepare for the Day when every soul will be held accountable.
May Allah grant us the wisdom to appreciate His blessings, the strength to obey His commands, and the sincerity to follow the noble footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). May He make us among the people of the right hand and, by His infinite mercy, among the foremost believers who attain closeness to Him in the eternal Gardens of Paradise.
Ameen.
