Workers seek arrears, min wage

Police have baton-charged and dispersed workers of a garment factory blocking the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar, near Dhaka City, demanding their unpaid wages for the months of November and December.Workers of two other factories held demonstrations in Narayanganj City, seeking wages fixed by a government wage board in Nov.
Fa Apparels Ltd’s workers besieged the nearby highway in Savar’s Hemeyetpur, demanding their unpaid wages for Nov and Dec, said Industrial Police.
Workers alleged that at least 15 of them were injured in the police action.
Industrial Police SI Omar Faruk said the factory owners had shut down the establishment on Jan 15 without clearing the dues.
The workers often held agitation over the issue, he said.
“Getting no response from the authorities regarding the pending wages, around 200 workers blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway around 9am,” police said.
The Industrial Police rushed to the scene, baton-charged the agitating workers, and cleared the highway.
Agitation For Latest Wage Award
Workers of two garment factories staged demonstrations in Narayanganj city, demanding the implementation of the minimum wage of Tk 5,300 fixed by the government.
The workers from Naaz and Rars, and Nikita apparel factories held a rally in front of the Narayanganj Press Club around noon.
Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station OC Kader said no untoward incidents occurred during the agitation.
Garment workers’ leaders Jahangir Alam Golok, Selim Mahmud, among others, spoke at the gathering.
The owners of the two factories are yet to implement the latest wage award, alleged the workers. –
