16 killed, 40 injured in Cameroon bus crash

At least 16 people were killed and approximately 40 others injured early Friday following a collision on the Yaounde-Bafoussam highway in Cameroon.


The accident took place at Nomale in the Ndikinimeki subdivision of the Mbam-et-Inoubou division, located in the Centre region.

According to police and eyewitness, a passenger bus slammed into a parked truck loaded with planks. Among those killed were seven members of the same family who were traveling to attend a funeral.

State broadcaster media said the number of injuries, while local police confirmed that formal investigations have been launched to determine the precise cause of the crash.

Road accidents are a common occurrence in Cameroon, frequently attributed to reckless driving and poor infrastructure. Data from the Cameroonian Ministry of Transport reveals that approximately 1,500 people die annually in road-related incidents across the central African nation, reports UNB.
