Members of the Mexican Navy arrive at El Castillo prison after reports of a riot in the facility, in Mazatlan, Mexico 8 October, 2026.

Ten people, including a child visiting a relative, were killed in a brawl at El Castillo prison in Mexico’s northwestern state of Sinaloa on Thursday, local authorities said.

Another 16 inmates were injured and taken to hospital for medical treatment, the state’s Secretariat of Public Security said in a statement.

Personnel from several agencies intervened to restore order, and the prison is now under control, the secretariat said.

The state prosecutor’s office has been notified and will investigate the circumstances of the incident and determine responsibility.

Social workers are providing the victims’ families with updates, while prison visits have been suspended as a precaution.

Authorities said the remaining inmates were unharmed.
