Vietnam is building a stadium in Hanoi that is set to surpass India’s Narendra Modi Stadium as the world’s largest by seating capacity.
The planned VinFast–Trong Dong Stadium will accommodate 135,000 spectators, 3,000 more than the 132,000-seat Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India.
If construction proceeds as planned, the new stadium could be completed in 2028, making it the world’s largest stadium by capacity.
The project is part of Vietnam’s Hanoi International Sports Urban Area, a major development designed to support large-scale sporting and entertainment events.
Construction was officially launched on December 19, 2025, with an investment of around $2 billion, according to the project details.
The stadium’s design draws inspiration from the traditional Đông Sơn bronze drums of ancient Vietnam, combining modern architecture with the country’s cultural heritage.
One of its key features will be a retractable roof that can open and close automatically. This will allow the venue to host not only sporting competitions but also major concerts and other large events.
The stadium is targeted for completion by August 2028, although it remains uncertain whether construction will finish within the planned timeframe.
Once completed, the 135,000-seat venue is expected to overtake India’s Narendra Modi Stadium, which currently holds the record for the largest stadium by capacity.
