Thousands of people from various walks of life participated in candlelight vigils across Kolkata yesterday, protesting against the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Men and women gathered in large numbers throughout West Bengal's capital, switching off their lights at 9:00 p.m. as a mark of protest. The demonstrators demanded justice for the victim, a swift investigation, and the immediate arrest of those responsible for the heinous crime, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

Reports from different parts of Kolkata, including Shyam Bazaar, R G Kar Medical College in North Kolkata, Jadavpur, Dharmatala, and Victoria Memorial, described residents turning off their lights in solidarity with the protest.

Ordinary citizens joined doctors outside R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in a candlelight march, calling for justice for the young victim, whose tragic death has shocked the community.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose also took part in the vigil, lighting a candle at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata as a protest against the horrific crime.

BJP MP and federal Minister Sukanta Majumdar led the party's 'Raat Dokhol,' a candlelight vigil demanding justice for the victim. Majumdar emphasized that the BJP's involvement was "non-political," with the party acting as a secondary supporter, while ordinary people, social organizations, and civil society took the lead in the protests.

Earlier in the day, several lawyers formed human chains outside Calcutta High Court and Bankshall Court, demanding justice for the murdered doctor. Holding placards and chanting slogans, they made their voices heard outside the court buildings.

After forming a human chain, the lawyers at Bankshall Court also participated in a rally, calling for justice for the victim.
