Blast at Turkish Arms Factory Kills 12, Injures 4

Greenwatch Desk World News 2024-12-24, 6:58pm

A powerful explosion rocked an armaments factory in northwest Turkey on Tuesday morning, leaving at least 12 people dead and four others injured. The incident occurred at a facility in Balıkesir province, as reported by the state-run Anadolu Agency.

Balıkesir Governor İsmail Ustaoğlu confirmed that the blast caused the collapse of the building where capsule production was underway, while nearby structures sustained minor damage. Rescue operations are ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the full extent of the destruction.

Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç announced on the social media platform X that four public prosecutors have been assigned to lead a thorough investigation into the cause of the explosion. "Our priority is to uncover the reasons behind this tragic incident and ensure accountability," he said.

The explosion has raised concerns about safety measures at the facility, which produces components critical for military operations. Local authorities have urged residents to stay away from the area as investigations and recovery efforts continue.
