Delhi’s caretaker Chief Minister Atishi confirmed the death toll, and said the victims’ bodies were taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain Hospital. The stampede happened around 8 p.m. local time on two platforms as passengers waited to board trains bound for the festival's temporary township in Prayagraj.
Dr. Ritu Saxena, deputy medical superintendent at the hospital, stated that the victims did not appear to have open injuries, and suggested that most likely died from hypoxia or blunt trauma, though a full autopsy is pending.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his distress over the tragedy, offering condolences and wishing for a quick recovery of the injured. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also conveyed his grief over the loss of lives. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced an investigation to determine the cause of the stampede.
This incident follows another stampede during the six-week-long festival last month, which claimed the lives of at least 30 people as millions of Hindus gathered to bathe in the sacred river.
