At least 11 people, including three children, tragically lost their lives early Saturday when a residential building collapsed in a northeastern district of New Delhi, an area predominantly populated by migrant workers.

Emergency teams worked tirelessly throughout the day to rescue survivors from the debris. Eleven people were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals, with five still undergoing treatment, according to reports.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow on social media, offering condolences to the victims' families and wishing the injured a swift recovery. President Droupadi Murmu also extended her condolences, calling the incident “very sad.”

The cause of the collapse has not been confirmed yet, but the area is known for unregulated construction and overcrowded housing, which often leads to such tragedies.

Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra blamed local municipal officials for permitting unsafe and illegal buildings to operate unchecked. He called for an urgent survey of these structures and demanded strict action to prevent further incidents.

Eyewitnesses described the four-storey building as collapsing suddenly, with local media reporting it fell “like a stack of cards.” Building collapses remain a recurrent issue in India, especially in densely populated urban areas where building codes are frequently violated.
