Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a three-day ceasefire from May 8-10 to coincide with Moscow's World War II Victory Day celebrations, the Kremlin announced on Monday.

Russia expects Ukraine to issue a similar truce order and warned of a swift response to any violations. Putin had previously called for a temporary ceasefire during Easter, but both sides accused each other of violations.

The ceasefire, running from midnight May 7-8 to midnight May 10-11, aims to reduce fighting during the 80th anniversary of Victory Day. The Kremlin emphasized that violations would prompt an effective Russian response.

The announcement comes amid heightened diplomatic efforts, with former U.S. President Donald Trump questioning Putin's commitment to peace after continued missile strikes on civilian areas. Meanwhile, Russia stated it was open to direct negotiations with Ukraine, but insisted on recognition of its control over Crimea and other regions, which Ukraine refuses.

In battlefield developments, Russia claimed full control of Kursk with North Korean assistance and announced advances in the Kharkiv region.
