Iran’s judiciary has confirmed that at least 71 people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Evin prison in Tehran, a facility notorious for housing political detainees.

According to judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir, who shared the update on the official Mizan news agency website Sunday, the casualties included prison staff, military personnel, inmates, and visiting family members.

The attack, which took place on June 23, damaged several sections of the prison and raised alarm among human rights organizations about the safety of those held inside.

This marks the first time Iran has released an official death toll from the incident. On Sunday, authorities also confirmed the death of Ali Ghanaatkar, a senior prosecutor known for targeting political dissidents, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi. He is set to be buried at a shrine in Qom, reports UNB.
