At least 25 Palestinians were killed overnight in Israeli airstrikes and gunfire across Gaza, according to local health officials and ambulance services on Saturday (26 July).

Several victims were reportedly shot while waiting for humanitarian aid near the Zikim crossing, with medical staff at Shifa Hospital confirming that most had suffered gunshot wounds. Four additional people died in an airstrike targeting an apartment building in Gaza City.

The Israeli military has not commented on the latest incident. It comes just days after a similar tragedy at Zikim, where at least 79 Palestinians were killed as they attempted to access aid. At the time, Israeli forces said they fired at crowds they considered a threat.

The renewed violence follows a collapse in ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas. Negotiations stalled after both the United States and Israel withdrew their delegations on Thursday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his government is now exploring “alternative options.” A Hamas official indicated talks may resume next week, describing the pause as a pressure tactic.

Mediators Egypt, Qatar, and the US have described the suspension as temporary, though no specific timeline has been given.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deteriorate. The United Nations has warned of an imminent famine. While Israel claims it is allowing aid in without restrictions, the UN says deliveries are hindered by military constraints and looting.

In a rare move, Israel approved food and milk formula airdrops requested by Jordan. The UK also pledged urgent assistance through Jordan.

World Central Kitchen has resumed limited food operations in Deir al-Balah, aiming to serve 60,000 meals per day—less than half its previous capacity due to extreme shortages.

According to Gaza’s health ministry, the ongoing conflict has killed at least 59,733 people and injured over 144,000. In Israel, 1,139 people were killed during Hamas’s 7 October 2023 attacks, and more than 200 were taken hostage.
