The gunman reportedly committed suicide after the incident.
At least six people were killed after a gunman opened fire at a market in Bangkok on Monday, according to Thai police.
Among the dead was the gunman himself, who took his own life, said Charin Gopatta, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau.
Police confirmed that the five victims were security guards at the market. The gunman’s identity and motive are still under investigation.
No tourists were among the casualties, said Sanong Saengmani, a police official in Bangkok’s Bang Sue district, where the agricultural market is located.
The shooting is a blow to Thailand’s tourism sector—one of the main drivers of its economy—which has already been facing challenges amid sluggish growth.
Police shared video footage showing a suspect in a white hat and backpack walking through the market’s parking lot.
Gun violence is not rare in Thailand. In October 2023, a 14-year-old used a modified handgun to kill two people and injure five others at a Bangkok mall. A year prior, a former police officer carried out a mass killing at a nursery, claiming 36 lives, including 22 children.
