Smoke billows from the site of Israeli air strikes in Sanaa, Yemen August 24, 2025.

The Israeli military launched airstrikes on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, hitting a military compound near the presidential palace, two power plants, and a fuel storage site. Houthi authorities reported at least two deaths and five injuries.

Israel stated the strikes were in response to repeated Houthi attacks on its territory, including recent surface-to-surface missile and UAV launches.

On Friday, the Houthis claimed to have fired a ballistic missile toward Israel in support of Palestinians in Gaza. An Israeli official said the missile likely carried multiple sub-munitions meant to detonate on impact, marking the first time such a missile has been launched from Yemen.

Since the outbreak of Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza in October 2023, Iran-aligned Houthis have targeted vessels in the Red Sea and frequently fired missiles toward Israel. Israel has retaliated with strikes on Houthi-controlled areas, including the Hodeidah port.

Abdul Qader al-Murtada, a senior Houthi official, reaffirmed their commitment to Gaza, saying the group would continue supporting Palestinians regardless of the cost.
