Venezuela Says US Raid Killed 100, Maduro and Wife Hurt

Venezuela’s Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said Wednesday that a US military operation in Caracas that led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro resulted in about 100 deaths and dozens more wounded.

Cabello, speaking on state television, described the attack as devastating and said the figures were preliminary. He added that both Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were injured during the raid but are recovering.

The US-led operation, which took place earlier this week, ousted Maduro from power and brought him and his wife to the United States to face charges related to drug trafficking and other allegations, according to US authorities.

Venezuelan officials reported that a large portion of Maduro’s security detail was killed in the operation, and Cuba said it lost members of its military and intelligence personnel stationed in Venezuela. The interim government has declared a week of national mourning for those who died.

The exact breakdown of casualties has not been independently confirmed, and numbers differ among sources, but the minister’s statement marks the first official toll released by Venezuelan authorities.
