11 killed in Ctg stampede as iftar gift-giving goes wrong

At least 11 people were killed and 50 others injured as they scrambled to collect iftar items distributed by the management of Kabir Steel and Re-Rolling Mills (KSRM) at Nolua union in Satkania upazila on Monday.

Nine of the deceased were identified as Fatema Begum, 16, Tuntuni Begum, 15, and Nur Jahan, 22, of Lohagarah upazila, Rima Begum, 30, Hasina Akhter, 40, Rashida Akhter, 50, Sakhi Akhter, 24, and Jotsna Akhter, 30, of Satkania upazila, and Nur Ayesha, 60, of Bandarban district.

Deputy Commissioner of the district Mohammad Elias Hossain said the stampede occurred as hundreds of destitute people crowded there for collecting iftar items ahead of Ramadan, leaving 10 people dead on the spot.

Among the injured, one died at a local hospital.

Satkania upazila nirbahi officer Mobarak Hossain said the incident took place when the KSRM authorities started distributing the iftar items in front of the house of its owner Mohammad Shajahan around 12 pm.

Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Satkania Police Station, said the casualties took place in stampede and ‘due to excessive heat in crowd’.

Chattogram Superintendent of Police Nure Alam Mina said six bodies have been handed over to their family members.

He also feared that the causalities might go up.

Meanwhile, the local administration formed a five-member probe body to look into the incident, said the DC. “Necessary action will be taken after getting the probe report,” he said.
