3 of five BD school footballers swept in river found dead


Cox’s Bazar, July 14 – Members of Fire Service and Civil Defense recovered three bodies among five students who went missing while collecting a ball that fell in Matamuhuri river in Chakoria Upazila on Saturday. The headmaster of the school, Rafiqul Islam, said after finishing the exams, some students were to play football at a playground near the school around 4:30 pm.
At one stage their ball fell into the river and several of them dived into the water to bring it back.
“One of them swam ashore and five went missing as they were hit by a strong current of the river,” the headmaster added.

The accident occurred near Matamuhuri Bridge in the afternoon, said Kamal Hossain, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the district.
The missing students are Sayeed Jawat Orbit, Punno Bhattacharja, Farhan Bin Shawkat and Aminul Islam, all Class-X students and Aftab Hossain of Class-IX. All of them were students of Chakaria Grammar School adjacent to the river.
Rescuers were still searching for the remaining two students till filing of this report. – UNB
