Bahauddin Nasim acquitted in graft case

Dhaka – A Dhaka court on Thursday acquitted Awami League leader Bahauddin Nasim of acquiring wealth beyond his known income sources and concealing asset information. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) framed charges against the ruling party organizing secretary ten years ago, when the army-backed caretaker government was in office.
During the 2007-08 emergency regime, similar cases were filed against several politicians and businessmen, many of them were later dropped as these were deemed as ‘politically motivated.’
On Thursday, the Sixth Special Judge Court of Dhaka announced the verdict in the case on the charges involving Tk 20 million.
Judge KM Imrul Kayes of the court pronounced, ‘The prosecution has failed to prove the charges beyond doubt.’ Nasim, an MP from Madaripur, told newsmen, ‘This is a petty case…The court acquitted me of the charges as it found nothing.’ – Special Correspondent
