Bid to increase speedy trial jail term conspiracy: BNP


Dhaka – The BNP on Tuesday acused the government of hatching conspiracy to increase sentence term in speedy trial act in a bid to hold another January 5 like election conviting oppostion leaders and activists.“The ruling Awami League wants to hold another January 5 like election by showing opposition leaders and aactivists convicts in different cases. That’s why they are amending the act as the matter of election came in discussions,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir while speaking at a discussion meeting.
His comments came a day after the cabinet decided to increase the term of sentence in speedy trial act.
Mirza Alamgir said the sentence term in speedy trial act has been increased by two years. The sentence term has been increased from two years to seven years and earlier the punishment term was from two years to five years.
Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) organised the the meeting at dhaka Reporters Uniry to mark 36th death anniversary of BNP founder late President Ziaur Rahman.
The BNP leader called upon the government hold a neutral election in a good manner and saying there would be no January 5 like election in the country.
Otherwise, they will have to face severe consequense as like the previous autocrat governments, he said.
Mirza Alamgir alleged that the AL does not want to hold election taking people and BNP as they know they won’t be able to come to power if the poll is held under a caretaker government.
He said the AL is trying to distort the history and their staements on Zia is shamful.
Presided over bby DAB leader Prof Dr MA Qudsus, the meeting also discussed, among others, by Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, Prof Dr SM Rafiqul Islam Bacchu and Prof Dr Sirajuddin Ahmed. – Staff Reporter
