BNP on Wednesday briefed some foreign diplomats stationed in Dhaka about the country’s latest situation following the recent terror attacks and the High Court verdict convicting its senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman.Diplomats from some countries, including the USA, the UK, Germany, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Singapore, Pakistan, Norway, and Nepal and the United Nations, attended the hour-long meeting held at party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office around 4:00pm.
A BNP delegation, led by party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, briefed the envoys about the country’s overall situation, their party’s stance on Gulshan café and Sholakia eidgah terror attacks and Tarique’s conviction in a money-laundering case.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said it was a ‘routine exchange of views’ with the diplomats as they hold such meetings with them from time to time.
“BNP is one of the biggest political parties in the country with representation of the majority people. We used to sit with diplomats from time to time. Today’s (Wednesday’s) meeting is like that one, nothing special.”
However, two leaders who attended the meeting wishing anonymity said they elaborately discussed how and why Tarique was punished.
They also provided the diplomats with copies of the both verdicts of the High Court and the lower court and other documents to ‘substantiate’ their position that their leader was punished out of political vengeance.
A BNP standing committee member also preferring anonymity said they made it clear to the diplomats as two why a national unity is necessary as per their chairperson’s call. “We’ve also told the diplomats militancy and terrorism can’t be tackled only with administrative measures without a political unity.”
He also said the some diplomats asked them various questions about the national unity and they responded those.
The BNP leader also said they informed the foreign envoy that the government is trying to convict senior BNP leaders in various ‘false cases’ as part of its plot to make them disqualify for the national election.
