BNP plans a ‘big rally’ in Dhaka on Monday


Dhaka – The BNP plans to gather over one lakh people in and around of Suhrawardy Udyan where the party is going to hold a rally this afternoon.
Though the party is organizing the rally to mark the National Revolution and Solidarity Day but it will ultimately turn into a pre-election showdown and campaign, according party insiders.Party chairperson Khaleda Zia who will address the rally as the chief guest is likely to call the government to resolve the currently political impasse through talks and hold the next elections under a neutral administration, the insiders said.
The party wants to show its strength ahead of the next general elections and thus it has taken all-out preparation to stage another big showdown through the rally which would begin at 2:00pm.
Earlier, the BNP staged two showdowns after arrival of Khaleda Zia from London on October 18 and during her en-route trip to Cox’s Bazar to visit Rohingyas on October 28-31.
Party leaders expects that the Suhrawardy Udyan rally turn into a human sea with presence of huge number of party leaders, activists and supporters from the city and adjacent districts including Narsingdi, Gazipur and Narayangan.
The BNP is going to hold an outdoor public meeting in the city after about two years. The last public meeting of the BNP was held in front of the party central office on January 5 last year that was taken place to mark the two years anniversary of January 5, 2014 polls. Later, she also took part a Pohela Boishakh function in front of the party office on April 14 in the same year.
Meanwhile, police has given permission to BNP to hold the rally on 23-point conditions, said a BNP leader preferring anonymity.
The conditions including not using loudspeakers outside the venue, rally should end by 5:00pm, big processions could not be proceed towards the rally and city’s major roads cannot not be blocked, he said.
Meanwhile police has taken tight security measures to maintain law and order during the rally, police sources said.
In another development, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a press briefing said they asked the party leaders and activists to remain alert and show highest patience amid any extreme provocation.
About police clearance to the BNP, he said there is no alternative to them without giving the permission.
Democratic norms should be restored and congenial atmosphere should be created to fulfill the desire and aspirations of the people.
He said they received a permission letter from the DMP on 23-point conditions.
Replying to a question, he said the BNP is working to restore democratic process in the country and Khaleda Zia would pass on the message in this regard from the rally.
He also sought cooperation from the law enforcers to hold the rally peacefully.
Earlier on Friday, a BNP delegation led by vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman visited the venue and fixed the place for the podium. – Staff Reporter
