Christmas celebrated in Bangladesh


The Christian community in Bangladesh today celebrated the holy Christmas, marking the birth of their Prophet Jesus Christ amid festivity and religious fervour.
Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus Christ on the day. The day is a public holiday in Bangladesh as in most other countries of the world.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Bnp leader Begum Khaleda Zia issued messages greeting the Christians of the country and elsewhere.Ringing of church bells in the midnight marked the advent of the day when the followers of the faith welcomeed it with carols assembling in churches and other such venues.
Churches and adjoining areas were illuminated while decorated Christmas trees placed with a Santa Claus handing out Christmas gifts to the children.
President Hamid hosted a reception for the members of the community in the morning at Bangabhaban.
National dailies published special articles, while Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and private TV and radio channels broadcast special programme highlighting the significance of the day.
Chief Priest of Catholic Churches in city’s Tejgaon area Father Albert T Rozario along with hundreds of devotees joined at the final prayers of the day.
