Dialogue only on CG, offer must from PM: BNP

BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Friday said his party is interested in engaging in dialogue with the government but it should be only on caretaker government issue.
“BNP is never against dialogue but there should be a specific agenda for the talks…it should be the caretaker issue. We’ll consider it if the offer comes from the Prime Minister,” he said while addressing a pre-procession rally in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan Central office in the capital.
Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal (JMD), the women wing of the main opposition party, brought out the procession from the BNP’s central office in the morning marking the International Women’s Day.
Mosharraf came up with the remarks apparently in response to Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam’s comment that the ruling party is ready to hold dialogue with the opposition on any issue to resolve the ongoing political crisis.
Clarifying his party’s stance on the discussion, Mosharraf, also a former minister, said, “BNP will decide (whether to join the discussion) after getting a formal proposal from the Prime Minister.”
The BNP policymaker, however, expressed dissatisfaction over the ongoing countrywide violence and asked the government to create a congenial atmosphere for holding the discussion. “Create an environment for talks by putting an end to mass killing by police and Rab members.”
Accusing the government of pushing the country into anarchy, he said, “They (government) want to fish in the troubled waters by creating a reign of terror …they have divided the nation.”
Charging the government with indulging in conspiracies to impose state of emergency in the country, he warned, “People won’t tolerate such a move…they’ll foil their (government’s) all the evil designs.”.Reminding the government of their just-initiated one-point movement, he said all parties under the BNP-led 18-party alliance have already been united to oust this government. “That movement might erupt any time,” he said.
BNP vice-chairman Selima Rahman, JMD president Nure Ara Safa and its general secretary Shirin Sultana, among others, addressed the rally.
