DoE warns 109 industries to improve environment


Khulna – In a bid to ensure eco-friendly industrial atmosphere, the Department of Environment (DoE), Khulna office has given notices to 109 industries in the last one month to improve their processing system otherwise they may face closure.
“We have already warned 109 industries and keeping a strong vigil on others to keep up eco-friendly industrial condition in Khulna Division,” Director of DoE of Khulna Dr. Mallick Anwar Hossain said.He said, “DoE has already stopped giving environment clearance certificate to the industrial polluters and have suggested concerned authorities to take legal actions against industrial units which are operating without environmental clearance.”
The local DoE has geared up its initiative from this year to improve the industrial environment in the division where over one thousand of medium and large industries are being run directly having impact on environment.
The industries include 36 large shrimp and fish processing factories, 10 state-run and 23 private jute mills, 10 cement factories, 116 feed mills, 5 large petroleum gas (LPG) factories, 6 pharmaceuticals, 7 iodized salt factories and 12 plywood factories.
The officials of the DoE of Khulna, however, expressed their satisfaction about the overall quality of industrial environment.
They said a recent test report of local DoE laboratory on air quality, presence of liquid filth and sound quality of 330 industries, air of 97 industries, liquid-filth of 93 industries and sound quality of 41 industries are eco-friendly.
Besides, out of 58 points of at least 12 rivers water at 50 points are of quality and inhabitable for fish and other bio-diversity.
“We are adhering to strict procedure in qualifying an industrial unit because of eco-friendly as the move for setting up new industrial units in the areas has increased manifold with the enhanced development activities in the areas and three Economic Zones and modernization of Mongla Port near completion.
Besides, uninterrupted electricity supply and supply of gas through pipe line in Khulna region encouraging the entrepreneurs to set up industrial units in Khulna, Mongla, Bagerhat, Satkhira and adjacent areas.
The DoE has classified green, orange and red categories of industries. Of them, green category is eco-friendly and most of the orange category will become eco-friendly by the speedy effort of DoE.
Terming red category industries are harmful for environment, he said adding, joint effort of the DoE and other public administration concerned would change the environment situation.
Punitive action should be taken against red categories industries, if the industry owner did not pay heed about turn it as green categories.
He said that the initiative of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of making pollution free environment will succeed with the establishment of 70 to 80 percent eco-friendly industries across the country. – Agencies
