Govt. is working to protect rivers from pollution, grabbing

The government will take a crash programme to check river pollution and grabbing, said Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan on Sunday.“The government won’t compromise with those who pollute and grab rivers. We’ll move ahead with a crash programme to protect our rivers,” he said.
The minister made the remarks at an intra-ministerial meeting at his ministry.
Shahjahan Khan said their ministry is working to save rivers from pollution and grabbing as per the Prime Minister’s commitment to do so.
Mentioning that rivers are the country’s lifeline, he urged all to come forward to save the rivers together.
At the meeting, Bangladesh Navy has presented a detailed action plan to implement the programme to save Buriganga, Turag, Balu and Shitalkhya from pollution and grabbing and restore their navigability.
Navy chief admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed laid out the action plan.
The meeting was told that a monitoring and coordination committee, led by the Navy chief, will work to protect the rivers through coordinated efforts. The high officials of the ministry and organisations concerned will also have representation in the committee.
It focused on identifying the causes of river pollution and taking effective plans to overcome those.
