‘Half million opposition activists indicted in 14,000 cases:’ BNP


BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday said the comments of some ruling party leaders including ministers and MPs suggest that they have become mentally deranged.
‘That’s why they (Awami League leaders) want to bite BNP leaders like stray dogs and break the arms and legs of opponents and appear on the streets in lungi,” he said while addressing the council of city unit of Labour Party at Instittue of Engineers, Bangladesh.The BNP leader said the government has been resorting to different tactics to eliminate opposition politics and dissidenting opinion.
He alleged that the government has implicated about half a million opposition leaders and activists in 14,000 cases.
“Their activities have even defeated the action of the Pakistani occupation forces,” he said.
He called upon the people to take to the streets to overcome the situation.
“We have to go for a tougher action to force the government to quit; otherwise the country would fall into a black hole,” he said.
The BNP spokesperson accused the government of removing opposition backed elected representatives from local government administration.
Presided over by city convenor of Labour Party Shamsuddin Parvez, the council also addressed, among others, by party chairman Mostafizur Rahman Iran, secretary general Hamdullah Al Mehedi, Engr Farid Uddin, Lokman Hakim and Emdad Ali Chowdhury.
Meanwhile, talking to reporter after placing wreath at the mazar of President Ziaur Rahman, the BNP leader said retreating from holding of Khaleda Zia’s public meeting in Gazipur was a tactical decision.
He said the BNP would continue the ongoing movement taking people with them unti the government would not quit.
Earlier, Fakhrul along with party leaders and activists placed wreath at the mazar of Ziaur Rahman to mark the 34th founding anniversary of Krishak Dal, a front organisation of BNP.
General Secretary of Krishak Dal Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Takdir Hossain Jasim, among others, were present on the occasion. – Staff Reporter
