Hold free-fair polls: Resist move to make Khaleda convict


Dhaka – The BNP on Sunday called upon the people as well as the party leaders and activists to resist the conspiracy being hatched against party chairperson Khaleda Zia to make her convict.
“The government is hatching a conspiracy to make Khaleda Zia a convict unjustly. Thus, let us all resist the move,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir while speaking a huge gathering prior to bringing out party’s victory procession.He accused the present government of trampling the rights of the people by establishing one-party BAKSAL regime.
The BNP leader also called upon the people to get united to realize the demand for a neutral government to hold the next general elections in a free, fair and acceptable manner.
The BNP brought out the victory procession participated by thousands of leaders, activists and supporters from in front of its Naya Paltan central office to mark the December 16 Victory Day.
The processionists carrying colourful banners, festoons, placards, party election symbol – the sheaf of paddy and balloons began marching down the streets at about 3:00 pm and touched Kakrail crossing, Shantinagar before being ended at Malibagh intersection.
The BNP activists paraded different city streets dancing with the rhythms of drums, singing patriotic songs and chanting slogans in favour of party founder late president Ziaur Rahman, party chairperson and Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman.
Earlier, they started to gather in processions in front of the party’s central office from 1:00 pm wearing colourful clothes and red and green headbands. The gathering created traffic congestions at the surrounding areas of the BNP office pushing the passengers to suffer for hours.
Boarding on rickshaw vans, horse carts, bullock-carts and motorcycles, they chanted slogans in favour of party election symbol – the sheaf of paddy, party founder late president Ziaur Rahman, party chairperson Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman.
Wearing combat dresses like the freedom fighters, they also staged mock fighting attacking the Pakistani occupation forces with tanks, guns and other weapons.
Mirza Alamgir regretted that even after 46 years, the people are still sacrificing their lives, being victims of the enforced disappearance and harassed to restore the democracy in the country.
He further said despite party chairperson Khaleda Zia struggled nine years for the democracy but she is now being harassed by implicating her in “false cases.”
“Cases are being filed against party senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman one after another and party leaders and activists are poured into prisons. Thus, we have to raise our voices against the misdeeds of the government,” he added.
Senior party leaders including party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury led the procession.
Wearing red and green colour dresses, leaders and activists of the party and its front organizations including Mohila Dal and Muktijoddah Dal took part in it. – Staff Reporter
