Dhaka – Election Commissioner Abu Hafiz on Sunday said a healthy
democratic practice is needed for creating a level-playing field for
all candidates in the upcoming general election.
“Only law is not enough…we’ll have to ensure a healthy democratic
practice for creating a level-playing field,” he told reporters at his
Election Commission secretariat office.
Hafiz said the caretaker government system does not exist after the
15th amendment to the Constitution. Under the circumstances, the
electoral system will be similar to that of Britain, but Britain did
not need law to ensure a level-playing field and their achievement did
not come overnight.
“They (Britain) achieved it through healthy democratic practices.
Hence without bringing a change in the political culture, it’s not
possible to ensure the level-playing field,” he continued.
There is no problem for the sitting Members of Parliament to contest
the election as they are not holding the office of profit, Hafiz said
expecting that all political parties will join the next parliamentary
