Police arrested an alleged mugger over the death of a six-month-old baby who fell off his mother’s lap and died during a mugging incident in the city’s Doyaganj area on December 18.
“The prime accused Rajib was arrested from the Ghuntighar of the city’s Gendariya area on Saturday midnight and he was produced before the court at noon today,” Jatrabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Anisur Rahman told BSS.
Police sought a 10-day remand for Rajib for interrogation, he said.
Earlier, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Badrul Islam of Jatrabari Police Station was suspended for negligence in duty after the incident of mugging and death of the infant.
The victim Arafat came to Dhaka from Shariatpur with his parent for medical treatment of his a two-year-old elder brother Al-Amin.
Aklima and her husband Shah Alam, with their two sons were going to her sister’s residence at Sanirakhra in the city by a rickshaw at dawn from Sadarghat.
A mugger suddenly tried to snatch Aklima’s purse from the moving rickshaw when it arrived at Doyaganj area. The force of the pull jerked Aklima off the rickshaw, along with the baby who was on her lap.
Arafat sustained serious wounds to his head after falling off his mother’s lap and was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Arafat’s father filed a murder case accusing an unidentified person with Jatrabari Police Station in this connection.
