Rangpur liquor swallowing death toll rises to 9


The death toll from liquor swallowing at Tajhat Bihari Palli in the city rose to nine as one more person died on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

The deceased is Jahurul Islam, 45, hailing from Mahiganj Dimla area. He died at the hospital at noon.

Earlier on Tuesday, eight people died and several others fell ill after taking locally brewed liquor at Tajpara Bihari Palli in the city.

Locals said a group of people drank brewed liquor overnight on Monday and fell sick after returning home on Tuesday morning.

Later, five of them died on the way to Rangpur Medical College Hospital while three others died at the hospital on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, in-charge of Mahiganj police camp sub-inspector Abdul Aziz and SI Ali Hasan were closed to the Rangpur Police Lines on Wednesday for dereliction of duty over the incident.

Besides, a total of 45 people were arrested from different parts in the city for their alleged involvement in drug trading.

Officer-in–charge of Kotwali Police Station Abdul Kadar Zilani said a murder case was filed by Amin Miah, brother of deceased Manir, accusing 24 people while police filed eight cases against 26 people.

Police super of Rangpur Abdur Razzak said drives would continue to stop drug trading and no one involved in the trading would be spared.
